Environment, Visibility & Everyday Culture

Physical Environment & Spaces

Shaping what pupils see and experience in the school environment.

  • Ensuring shared spaces (e.g. corridors, lunch halls, display areas) reflect diverse and balanced representation; showcase women and girls in fields they are sometimes neglected

  • Gender audit of play areas (e.g. who uses which spaces, how activities are structured), example on Page 10 here from Care Inspectorate

Resources, Materials & Representation

Ensuring what is used in teaching and daily school life reflects equality.

  • Auditing all resources to ensure they reflect a gender balance and are gender neutral

  • Whole-school audit of books/resources to include more gender-inclusive texts

  • Creating or curating a bank of recommended inclusive resources for staff and pupils

Visibility & Messaging

Making values visible and consistently reinforced.

  • Campaign visuals or thematic displays co-designed by students

  • Discussion cards in common areas like lunch halls

  • Terminology and visual messaging (including prompts on how to respond to unfair comments and behaviour) in classrooms and around the school

  • Displaying pupil-created work that challenges stereotypes or promotes equality

Role Models & Representation in Practice

Broadening pupils’ understanding of gender roles through real people and examples.

  • Celebrating diverse male and female role models (e.g. inviting non-stereotypical visitors such as female firefighters or male nurses)

  • Ensuring visiting speakers and examples across subjects reflect diversity

Events, Culture & Whole-School Moments

Using key moments to reinforce values and shape culture.

  • Celebrating milestones (e.g. International Women’s Day) with a feminist framing

  • Marking a wider range of events (e.g. Men’s mental health, anti-bullying week through a gender lens)

  • Embedding equality themes into assemblies and whole-school activities

Everyday Practices & Norms

Embedding equality into the day-to-day experience of school life.

  • How staff model language and behaviour in daily interactions; agreed staff approaches to challenging stereotypes in the moment

  • Reinforcing respectful behaviour consistently in informal spaces (playground, corridors)

  • Encouraging inclusive play and mixed participation in activities

  • Reviewing uniform policies

Focuses on shaping an inclusive school environment and everyday culture that visibly reflects and reinforces gender equality and respect. It involves reviewing and adapting physical spaces, resources, displays, and routines to ensure balanced representation, challenge stereotypes, and promote positive role models across the whole school community.
